Boston has the highest proportion of residents living in emergency shelters among U.S. cities.

According to a U.S. Conference of Mayor’s survey, Boston had the highest proportion of residents living in emergency shelters among U.S. cities surveyed. The survey of 25 major cities included Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington D.C., but not New York City. It found that 16,540 people were living in emergency shelters and another 3,900 in transitional hosing.
